If you think this spring is finally the season where you completely transform the property around your home, somewhere on that lengthy to-do list, there is probably an item about a fence. Perhaps your current fence is old, busted, or ugly. Maybe you don’t even have a fence at all. Either way, the first step in turning your backyard into an idyllic outdoor living area is with a new, beautiful fence installation. Residential fences benefit your property, and your GSA fence contractor can help you determine the best fence to fit your needs and budget. Before you sign that contract and get started, however, there are several things that you should do.
Talk To Your Neighbors
Before you embark on a new fencing project, take a moment to talk to your neighbors. Even if you aren’t the best of friends, you must let them know that you’re about to do a project that will impact them. Depending on where you live and the type of fence you’re building, you might have a huge impact on something they love about their house (if your new privacy fence blocks their view of a community feature like a playground for instance). Additionally, your neighbor might also be considering a new fence, and if you both get it done simultaneously, you could split the cost of the shared side.
Review The Rules
Depending on where you live, there may be rules or laws that govern they type of fence you put up. Most municipalities have laws about fence height and how close the fence can be to an intersection (so it doesn’t block the line of sight). They may also have requirements for permits and inspections. In some areas, you might also have Home Owners’ Associations, and they are much more likely to have more specific rules about fences, so check with them as well.
Consider Your Needs And Wants
Before you even start the search for a fencing contractor, figure out what you need and want from a fence. Any contractor will have a hard time making your dream a reality if you can’t articulate what that dream is. Make sure that you also differentiate between the things you need, the things you want, and the things that would be nice but aren’t that important. Does the fence need to be very tall to protect and contain an active dog or would it simply be nice to have the added privacy of a tall fence? Figure these factors out first and then ask your potential contractors to help you determine what fence fits your needs and wants best.
Do Your Due Diligence
Don’t jump on the first contractor who comes out and gives you a quote. Get multiple quotes and speak to several contractors to get a feel for what they think the best fence for your needs would look like. Then, do your homework, look them up on the Better Business Bureau, and read their reviews. The project’s final cost will play a huge role in the choice here, but it should never be the only deciding factor.
