If you’re thinking of installing a new fence, you have a variety of materials to choose from. Here at Hercules Fence, all of the fence materials we provide are of the highest quality. Still, they each have different pros and cons. When it comes to picking fence material, one of the biggest concerns people have is longevity. Today, we will tell you about how long you can expect some of these popular fence materials to last.
Chain Link
Longevity is—no doubt about it—one of chain link’s selling points as a fencing material. A well-maintained chain link fence will last about twenty years before it needs replacement.
That said, many people find that chain link isn’t as pleasant as they would like. Chain link fences are probably best employed for utilitarian purposes in commercial settings. For instance, they’re an excellent choice for pool fencing or as a high-security fence around a business.
Other kinds of metal fences, such as wrought iron, may be more pleasing to the eye, but they won’t last quite as long as chain link or be quite as cheap.
Wood
On the other end of the spectrum, let’s take a look at wood. Wood does not have the longevity of chain link fencing but still has a decent lifespan—about fifteen years if properly cared for.
But why doesn’t wood last as long as metal? Because it’s susceptible to two threats metal is not: rot and pests. However, keep in mind that pressure-treated wood (the kind we use in fences) is naturally resistant to both threats. But there’s no such thing as a wooden fence that is completely immune to them.
As the years go on, your wooden fence will begin to show its age. But fifteen years is still a long time, and in that period, you’ll be able to enjoy one of the prettiest fencing materials around.
Vinyl
Now, let’s move on to a material that falls somewhere between chain link and wood—vinyl. Vinyl is a wildly popular fencing material, and for good reason. It has virtually all of the aesthetic appeal of wood but with fewer of the drawbacks.
You can expect your vinyl fence to last for twenty years or even longer if it has been very well maintained. Maintenance is as easy as can be—just wipe it down with water and a non-abrasive cloth.
It’s easy to see why so many people are drawn to vinyl as a fencing material. But no matter what material you choose for your fence, you can’t go wrong so long as you come to Hercules Fence.
