A wrought iron fence adds aesthetic appeal and better security to your home. However, as time passes, your fence can develop rust and ruin its appearance and durability. If left unaddressed, the rust can significantly damage the fence, causing the post to break or bend. So, performing regular maintenance to keep your fence rust-free is essential. Here are some tips on what to do if you spot rust on your wrought iron fence.
What Causes Rust?
Several things can cause rust to develop on your iron fence. The first is chipped paint. Any time the fence paint flakes off to expose the iron underneath, rust will grow in that spot. Weather also plays a significant factor. Heavy rain and high humidity can cause rust, and wrought iron fences are more likely to rust in highly humid areas. Rust can also be caused by plants or dirt covering the fence.
Remove the Rust
Use a paint scraper to remove loose or peeling paint and a wire brush to scrub away old rust and paint. Sandpaper or a wire brush is best for small spots, while a handheld disc sander may work better for larger areas. Finally, buff the entire fence with fine steel wool in a circular motion to smooth and prepare it for painting. Rinse with water to get rid of any remaining dust.
Neutralize Rust
The key to protecting your wrought iron fence is removing all the rust. Although you may not see any, some tiny particles are left over. Use a commercial rust neutralizer and mix it in a bucket per package instructions. Dip a wire brush into it and scrub the entire fence in a circular motion. You can also use lemon juice and vinegar to neutralize the rust.
Rustproof Your Iron Fence
After taking all that time and effort to remove the rust, you want to ensure it doesn’t return. Paint your fence with a rust-preventing primer, as it will act as a base coat and protect the material from moisture and corrosion, preventing future rust formation. Be sure to give the fence at least two coats of primer. Then, apply two thick coats of rust-resistant paint over the primer using a medium-sized paintbrush.
Maintain Your Iron Fence
Make sure you clean and inspect your fence at least once a year. Use steel wool to clean off the rust as soon as you see it to prevent it from going deep enough into the metal to cause a problem.
Proper maintenance will help keep rust from developing and causing a problem. It would be best not to make complicated repairs yourself and contact an experienced fence contractor instead.
